Bishop Ireton @ Gonzaga

While everyone was out enjoying happy hour early Friday evening, I was at the Gonzaga v. Bishop Ireton lacrosse game near downtown Washington DC. Gonzaga ended up scoring a few goals late to win 11-8 in an otherwise close match up. So far, March has provided some pretty nice light with all of these overcast days.

Dave Eismeier

Dave Eismeier is a senior at Bishop O'Connell high school out in Arlington, VA. During my travels around the city, visiting different gyms, photographing different basketball games, I sometimes crossed paths with and photographed Dave and the O'Connell varsity basketball team. Dave's mom saw the pictures, bought a few prints and that is how I came to shoot Dave's senior portraits.

We met up last Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial and the weather was the best it had been in a long time. 60 and sunny. And DC took advantadge. There were tons of people walking around messing up the backgrounds of my pictures. We made it work anyway. Dave and his family were great to kick it with during that hour and a half but it was clear that his little brother was not amused.

Ummm...60 and sunny, where you at?

Keep on Pushin'

Shout out to Archbishop Carroll who in three full seasons has only won one game. It's probably hard to win games in a competitive league when you field a team with players who've only picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time within the last two years. Keep on pushin'.

Guess Who's Bizack

Yeah it's your boy Sabrey Smith who was previously made famous by yours truly. For the most part, I've been shooting sports, sports and more sports and have been totally slacking on shooting portraits. Well here's to trying to get back in the groove. Yep, definitely behind on my portrait work, definitely.

Sab and I headed over to Fort Stevens park in NW Washington DC where we found shattered 40 bottles, condom wrappers, a couch cushion, dirty clothes and my favorite...dog shit. The park closes at dark, allegedly, but it seems like it's a home for nightly parties...invite only of course.

Shout out to Sab for being the designated guinea pig. Check out his music here. He and his fellow Good Hood mate also have a blog. Check it out.

St. Albans v. O'Connell @ Catholic

In another early season non-conference lacrosse match up between DC area high schools, St. Albans played Bishop O'Connell at Catholic University. Eh. O'Connell was in it until the third quarter when St. Albans unleashed a slew of goals late.

On a completely unrelated note...did anyone know that Louisville had a basketball and football hip hop fight song? Shout out to Catholic U for jacking the song and playing it at their events because they happen to have the same mascot as Louisville (cardinals) and shout out to Code Red.

March Madness: Lacrosse Edition

Last Friday (day two of the real March Madness) I took a break from basketball and the AU loss and shot a lacrosse game at high noon. The light, not so great. The game, pretty meaningless as St. Albans played McCallie, a team out of Tennessee. The game was tied 4-4 with about 40 seconds left when St. Albans called a time out. I don't know what happened during the time out (I was jamming Lupe Fiasco in the ipod), but the coach must have really drawn it up. A kid they kept calling Roger had the ball at about mid-field and let the clock tick down to about 13 seconds. Then he made a move toward the net. The next thing I know, the ball was in the back of it, the clock read 3.9 and St. Albans kids were hugging each other. With no chance for McCallie to score, the game was over at 5-4. It turns out that being outside instead of watching CBS, I didn't miss a thing.

Prep Stars

Yeah...more pictures of Georgetown Prep lacrosse crushing out of town teams. This time, Loyola out of Illinois. I don't know about you (my loyal readers) but it looks like Prep could be one of the top teams in the country. Shout out to winter weather...yep still here.

Rockhurst in da House

Cloudy day, even light. Perfect for shooting an outdoor sporting event. Perfect except for the temperature. Still too cold. Anyway, last weekend the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic kicked off at Georgetown Prep in the mean streets of North Bethesda. Lots of lacrosse playing Jesuits (or Jesuit educational institutions) from all over the country converged on the campus for three days of the good ol' LAX. Rockhurst High School took on Georgetown Prep and the kids from Kansas City came through and got crushed 18-2. Shout out to those blue uniforms...they were pretty dope.

Ahhh LAX

The end of the high school basketball season marks the beginning of the spring season. Too bad no one told the weather that it was time for outside athletic activities like lacrosse and baseball. Last Tuesday, I went to St. Albans and spent about and hour and 45 minutes in wind blowing, cloudy and brisk 40 degree weather. WHY? Good question, but its March already...I miss Houston. Shout out to those baby jerseys that lacrosse players wear. I guess there is a reason, but they still look funny.

Hyattsville, MD vs. SE DC

More than a few people could have guessed that DeMatha Catholic High School would be in the City Title game this year. But no one could have predicted the presence of Ballou High School. Ballou, more known for its world travelled marching band than basketball, stunned the DCIAA and made its way to and through the championship game. They also gave DeMatha a run for its money, but in the end, DeMatha continued their winning ways.

Warriors Win

Nope, not the Lady Warriors, just plain old Warriors. HD Woodson's girls basketball team perennially finds itself in the DCIAA Championship game if not the City Title game. Year in and year out, they come equipped with loads of Division I talent (who all seem to be going straight to NC State). This year was no different. Led by 6'6" Jeniece Johnson, the HD Woodson Warriors beat the Good Counsel Lady Falcons to be called the best high school girls basketball team in the area. Shout out to the Warriors who were rockin' the Penny's...in black and red, nice.

DC City Council...Running the City?

Before the Washington DC high school basketball city title game, the DC city council and members of the media played a long anticipated half court basketball game in which you can read about here and here. I must say, it was a pretty entertaining event, watching these old guys and gals that you would usually see in suits and pants suits and reporters that you never see, duke it out on the basketball court. Shout out to Tommy Wells who channeled "the logo" aka Jerry West.

Championship!!!

The Gonzaga v. DeMatha WCAC Championship game was all it was hyped up to be. If you don't believe me, watch the last twenty seconds. As an American University alum, I don't think I've ever seen Bender Arena packed with so many people. Congrats to DeMatha for coming out on top. Also, shout out to the Good Counsel Lady Falcons who took the girls championship by defeating Holy Cross. Up next...the city title game, which matches the DC public school champs against the DC private school champs played at Verizon Center.
