Ugly Win: Coolidge vs. Wilson Basketball

Coolidge basketball is currently undefeated in league play (4-0) but it seems that every game is the same. They apply full court pressure the whole game and jump out to a huge first quarter lead. They give up some of that lead in the second quarter. They then come out flat in the third and let the opposing team right back into the game. Then they take over again and complete the roller coaster victory in the fourth. I don't know how much longer they can keep winning like this, but a win's a win. Read about it here. Shout out to whoever decided to paint the key white on the Colts new floor. It bounces up a little more light into the player's faces.

Battle of the...

BANDS! I remember going to the Labor Day Classic one year with my sister. It was an annual game between the Prairie View A&M Panthers (her alma mater) and the Texas Southern University Tigers (Michael Strahan's alma mater). At the time she was in school, the team was so bad that the only time the stands were full was during halftime when the bands went at it. The rest of the time was spent milling around in the concourse of the Astrodome, getting phone numbers and seeing what everyone else was wearing.

That wasn't quite the scene at Cardozo high school last Friday during the Ballou/Wilson playoff game, but the way the Ballou Majestic Marching Knights performed brought back memories. The show included the band playing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" while completing all of the choreography with trombones and sousaphones in tow.

I played the trumpet in middle school. Shout out to bands.

Wilson vs. Ballou DCIAA Football Semi Final

The Ballou Knights polished off the Wilson Tigers 43-7 to advance to the 2009 Turkey Bowl to take on HD Woodson in the DCIAA championship game. The game was pretty slow and Ballou scored, scored and scored again. Wilson proved to be no match but how did they beat Coolidge?

I saw some players preparing the old Gatorade shower on the coach bit except it was a All Sport (do they still make that) cooler with water in it. I tried to get in front of the action without getting on the field but did not succeed. The players drenched the coach and he tried to escape by running onto the field. The only problem was that Wilson just snapped the ball and was right in the middle of a play. Oops. Shout out to the Ballou marching band, coming soon...

Congressional Bank Baseball Classic 2009

Last Saturday was a long one. I'm just going to ignore how many days have passed since the last post and tell you that I shot the 2009 Congressional Bank Baseball Classic which is a showcase of Washington DC high school baseball. Early on, the light was horrible and it didn't matter at all that I was shooting with this monster (not a baller yet, just a renter). At least it didn't rain this year like it did the last.

After the two semi-final games and the all star game, the main event pitted the St. Albans School (private) against Wilson High School (public) to determine the best team in the city (yes that includes the Woeful Nationals). The championship game was a rematch of last years with the same result. Once again shout out to St. Alban's for taking the 'ship and shout out to the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission...just cause.

Northwest's Finest

Nothing really exciting about this game. Coolidge prevailed by almost 30 and the gym is still dark as hell. Even the coach didn't get too animated on the sideline...but I did find this golden (greenish) ticket. Shout out to V-neck sweaters.

Orange Crush

The last time I checked in with the Coolidge Colts, they were fresh off of a blowout loss to a team from West Virginia. Weeks later, they're ripping through the DC public school league (DCIAA), often hanging 50 on their opponents. I've been playing hooky from Coolidge for two good reasons, 1) I'm still in the process of stacking money to the ceiling (aka busy) and 2) It just gets too dark, too fast for a 7pm start of a high school football game. So last Friday, I just shot some pregame stuff. Shout out to the Colts for going with the orange on orange.

Seeing Green

The final score was 41-10, so not much to blog about. The all green team (Wilson) defeated the kind of green team (Maret) during an early Friday evening showdown last week. The most exciting part of the evening was pre-game which included me driving around the school about six times watching parking spots I passed up previously become unavailable with each revolution. Yeah.
