Way Back Wednesdays: Nation Nightclub

Remember that club over on Half St. SE? Near the Wendy's that also used to be there? Yeah, it was called Nation and while I haven't been over there in a while, I'm pretty sure it's now a parking lot for Washington Nationals' games or a building full of condos.

On February 10, 2006 Heavy Syndication artists (Broadway, Blayz, Deuce and Sabrey) all opened for Fort Minor. They even had my man Jordy (dreads) manning the merch table.

Way Back Wednesdays: Club Envy

The night of March 31, 2007, I was kicking it at Club Envy in Washington DC if anyone ever asks you. The rapper you all know and love who calls himself Broadway Miller opened for a Miami-reppin' hip-hopper by the name of Rick Ross. I tried to photograph Broadway from the side of the stage but was quickly shooed into the crowd by Ross' goons in preparation for the main event. I haven't been a fan of Ricky's rap career and our brief encounter at the club might subconsciously be the reason. But for the last few months, I've been unable to stop myself from listening to Teflon Don and Deeper Than Rap...go figure.

Oh, and I took this picture of the DJ that night.

Broadway Miller: Catch up or get Caught Vol. 2

A few weeks ago I photographed my man Broadway Miller for his upcoming mixtape project titled Catch up or Get Caught: Vol. 2. I've known this cat for a while now and have documented his career from performing at Howard Homecoming and recording tracks at American University to opening for Fort Minor at Nation and Rick Ross at Fur. Over the years, he's happily been a guinea pig for many different portrait ideas that I've had. This time we shot atUnion 206 Studio in Alexandria, VA. (Quick plug: this place is a great space to work in, provides lots of location options and pretty much has everything you need to execute a successful shoot. Definitely check it out).

While CUOGC Vol. 2 has not yet been released, do yourself a favor and download The Mixtape before the Mixtape. Shoutout to this mini twitter party: @broadwaymiller @union206studio@starghill.

8to8: Broadway Miller -- North Carolina Rapper: INCOMPLETE

I've known Broadway for at least 4 years now and he's been the subject of many of my photo shoots. So far I've worked with him on all three of his albums. Chillin' Wit Customers Vol. 1, Gets It All Day and Catch up or Get Caught. He returned to Washington DC for the weekend to shoot a music video for his new song POSSE 2010 and attend his mixtape release party later that night at Lotus Lounge.

Check out the video for POSSE 2010 directed by Ryan A. Cole. Clearly an upgrade from Broadway's MTV debut.

I thought it would be a great opportunity to do an 8to8, but instead it turned out to be more like an 8to2. The latter part of the day ended up being a lot of driving around so we decided to cut it short. Here is a little of what I got that day. Shout out to Mr. Miller, you are not off the hook for a proper 8to8, good sir.

Broadway Miller

I photographed Broadway Miller for his mixtape Catch up or Get Caught about a month ago as seen here. He was also a willing participant in my Performance Portrait idea that that began with Deuce and Sabrey of Good Hood. So I have two questions for my Untitled audience. 1) Which Performance Portrait works better for Broadway? Leave your answers in the comments. And 2) Will you come to Broadway's listening party at Lotus Lounge (1420 K St. NW, Washington DC 20005) tonight from 9pm-10pm? Shout out to me because I'll be there.

Catch Up or Get Caught...

is the name of North Carolina MC Broadway Miller's upcoming mixtape. I photographed him and the mixtape's host, Washington DC's DJ Anonymous, for the project. Although everyone looks so serious, it was a pretty fun shoot with a pretty simple set up. One light, one white wall, one record, a pair of headphones and a 1961 Kodak camera purchased at a garage sale for 4 bucks. Check out Broadway's music and follow him on Twitter. Hell, follow DJ Anonymous on Twitter too. And while you're at it follow me too, although I don't say much. Shout out to one light, it's been working out pretty well for me lately.
