Houston Texans Training Camp 2016

Football back! But before football was all the way back, I spent some time in late July, early August with the Houston Texans at their annual training camp for Houston Press. Some of the players were returning stars, and others were trying to make the team. But there were a few newly acquired players with high expectations *cough* Brock *cough* Lamar *cough*.

It was hot, there was a lot of waiting around and did I mention that it was hot? The Texans are off to a 1-0 start after beating the Chicago Bears yesterday. So it looks like training camp paid off. Or is that not how this works? Big shout and good luck to the Bulls on Parade. Check out the gallery HERE!

Houston Arts Alliance for the Houston Press

I recently worked on a cover story with Houston Press about the Houston Arts Alliance's funding and how it frequently goes to the same people every year. I photographed sculptor Ed Wilson, Janette Cosley of the Ensemble Theatre and Jason Nodler of the Catastrophic Theatre. Wilson, who won, lost and won again a commission to create something for the newly remodeled lobby of the George R. Brown Convention Center was the cover guy. To read more about HAA and it's funding, take a look at Steve Jansen's story.

Brennan Williams and Booker T for Houston Press

If the NFL doesn't work out for me, maybe I can get into professional wrestling. That's a sentence that you'll never hear me say but it is a plan for Brennan Williams. Williams, former UNC Tar Heel and former Houston Texan offensive lineman is trying his hand at professional wrestling under the tutelage of WCW and WWE great, Booker T. Sean Pendergast does a great job of telling the story, so I'll let him do it. But I did get the chance to hit Wrestling Xercise Fitness, watch a workout and take a quick portrait. Big shout to Brennan and Booker T for the time and Sean Pendergast whom I've known of since about 1997 when I was heavy into Jim Rome!

Red Bull Reign - Houston @ Fonde

There is no chill time in 3v3 basketball. Like a shark in this game of basketball, if you stop moving, you'll die. Not literally of course, but your opponent will hit you with a back door cut to the hoop for an easy layup with the quickness. I think this is why I like shooting 3v3 tournaments so much. And also why I dislike playing anything less than 4s. I like to chill. Shout out to Team Glory for taking the Red Bull Reign crown at the legendary Fonde Rec Center and representing H-Town in Chicago in August.

HBU Football for Houston Press

This year marks the first year in the history of Houston Baptist University that a Husky-branded football team will take the field. Thanks to the good folks over at Houston Press (ahem, Monica) I was able to take my camera and explore a little bit of what that was like. They practiced early, early in the morning during preseason and then again in the heat of the day. The HBU Football is a team filled with freshmen and sophomore talent and if you ask any football coach, you need upperclassmen to win. I can tell you that they worked extremely hard, only to come into contact with Sam Houston State coming off back to back appearances in the FCS National Championship game. Unfortunately, the Huskies very first game of record was a 74-0 loss in Huntsville. I was extremely honored to have gotten the assignment and very excited to be doing what I think I do best. If you live in Houston, pick up a copy of the magazine and check out the article (and the pictures). If you don't live here, read it anyway! Shout out to first year anythings...you gotta start somewhere on your way to the top.
