Full Contact, No Pads: Part II

Just in time for this weekend's Super Bowl. Read this out loud in your best John Facenda voice.

25 fearless weekend warriors arise from their slumber each Saturday morning thinking about the grit of the trenches and the glory of the end zone. The hallowed gridiron of Sutter Middle School has become caked in mud where flourishing blades of green grass once lived. The participants trudge through. Eluding defenders while working with less than solid footing is not an easy thing. They reach for anything they can get their hands on. Loose shirts, baggy shorts or a single lock of dreaded hair. The chase is on and the pursuit is fierce as each team grinds out a slow pace to victory. No pads? No matter.

Portraits and Lyrics

And the unveiling of yet another one of my projects. This particular series of portraits have yet to be formally named but lets call them "performance portraits" for now.

I've known Sabrey for quite a long time...as you can see. And Roger for quite a bit longer. The Evanston born and raised hip hop duo is known as GooD HooD and I've even been known to step in the booth to spit hot fire in collaboration. But those were my younger days.

Now I just watch and listen. A few weeks ago I did a simple white seamless shoot with them for some new promo material. While at the shoot, I had them perform a verse from a few of their songs and shot as fast as my lights would recycle.

For me, what is even better than good music is the passion with which the artists performs. I tried to capture that. Shout out to GooD HooD and you can check their music out here and here.

Skateboard Key

My 13-year-old niece, Nekeita, is quite the athlete. I tossed the football around with her and she's got some hands. She stars on her 8th grade basketball team and claims she can beat me in a game of one on one (which would be quite the feat). She got a skateboard for Christmas and has pretty much been rolling on in the street everyday since then. So I gave her the nickname Skateboard Key which closely resembles the moniker of one Pharrell. She sure learned how to do an ollie faster than I ever did. Shout out to my grandmother's son for leaving a ladder in the garage.

Happy Father's Day

Since you're a faithful reader of the blog, you would know that I don't post on weekends. And because I will continue that trend, I'll post my Father's Day edition, today.

I called my dad Thursday evening just to say whassup and see how he was doing. Naturally he was in someone's 130 degree attic repairing the air conditioning for some poor soul in the Houston heat. My first job was working in these attics and I don't miss it at all. But I spent a lot of time in those cramped little spaces and learned a little about HVAC and a lot more about life. So thanks Dad and Happy Father's Day. Shout out to his Daddy and my Mama's Daddy. (I took the picture of him playing golf in the background).
