The Great Go-Kart Confusion

A couple of weeks ago, I thought I had a brilliant plan. I saw this flyer and thought to myself, "Self, this would be pretty cool to shoot. You should try to get in there and shoot that." So I reached out, quite blindly I might add, to try to get access to shoot this event. And I was successful. Yes! I'm thinking there is going to be a motocross event, outside, with lots of dirt, colorful uniforms and loud bikes. I'm thinking I'm going to light it and shoot some documentary stuff and possibly some portraits. A field day, right? Wrong.

This flyer, was actually for fans to have a meet and greet and the opportunity to race against the motocross riders...but at a go-kart track. So I get to this indoor racetrack and I'm thinking to myself, "Self, where is all the dirt? There must be another track, outside, behind the building." And that's when I got the news. Instead of motocross, I'd be shooting indoor go-kart racing. I could have packed up all my toys and gone home, but I didn't. I just shot some go-karts. Shout out to the good folks at K1 Speed. Also, I'm still looking for the words "go" and/or "kart" on that flyer.

Long Live The Kings

Some of you may have heard, or not, but the city of Sacramento is keeping their NBA franchise in town. After a lot of back and forth with the Maloofs looking to move the Kings to Anaheim, Virginia Beach and Seattle, Mayor Kevin Johnson with the help of an ownership group led by Vivek Ranadive has successfully kept the team in the city. To celebrate this King continuity, there was rally at Cesar Chavez Park smack dab in the middle of Sacramento.

In my two years here, one thing I've learned is that this place looooooooooves the Kings. They love Jimmer and Webber and Vlade and Mitch and Tyreke and Bobby (Hurley and Jackson) and Peja and IT and Bibby. All those cats. They love them. And they came out in full force to celebrate at least 35 more years of the purple and black royalty.

Shout out to KJ, David Garibaldi, Carmichael Dave's RV, Chris Webber jerseys and that big ass banner that everyone signed. Long Live the Kings.

Tale of Two Diamonds

This spring, I put in practice time a couple of days a week shooting sports that I can't say I've spent a whole lot of hours shooting. The diamond sports. I'm not particularly inclined to enjoying either (watching, or playing) but always look forward to the opportunity to get a good shot. The only thing is, you've really got to pay attention. If you blink, you might miss one of the few chances for action. Shout out to the Houston Astros, the 2013 AL West Champs. Count on it.

After The Storm

Usually when I'm driving, I always notice the sky after a brief rainstorm has passed. The sun is coming through the clouds behind me and the dark clouds are ahead of me...retreating. It makes a cool canvas of light shining on a dark background. Am I the only one?

Anyway, that happened to me yesterday but this time, I was shooting baseball. It was still a little bit cloudy so the light was pretty even. The sun was shining just enough to get some light on the faces and you can see the dark clouds in the background. Pretty cool right? Or am I still the only one who thinks so? My adopted school, Monterey Trail, was 2 hit and lost 11-0. The sun'll come out...tomorrow.

Full Contact, No Pads: Part V

Seems like this is becoming somewhat of a series, eh? March 9th, (RIP B.I.G., anniversary of Washington's football team trading for RGIII) I re-visited the scene at Natomas High School to photograph these wild and crazy guys who play tackle football with no armor. The game was a blowout with a score of 7-2 (49-14 in real football scores) but everyone enjoyed themselves and most importantly, no one got hurt. Here are a few of the highlights. Oh, and shout out to this little project of mine...I've no idea of its next steps. Any suggestions?
