I only shot the 3rd place game from the National Jesuit Christmas Classic between Georgetown Prep and Loyola Blakefield. After Georgetown Prep (local team) was knocked out of the final game two nights ago, I no longer had any interest in the Belen vs. St. Xavier final. Last night's Prep game was not nearly as exciting. So here's some pictures. Shout out to the ref that awarded an "and one" to a Loyola player who missed the basket as he was fouled.

National Jesuit Christmas Classic: Day 2
Congratulations NJCC. So far, the Christmas classic has been so (except that it is now December 30). The final game of the second night was between Belen Jesuit from Miami and Georgetown Prep. Presumably Georgetown Prep was the favorite because traditionally schools host tournaments with winning the tournament in their minds. It was close throughout with Georgetown Prep trailing early and rallying late. The game got a little chippy down low with under two minutes to play including wayward elbows and flailing arms amongst the big men. Markel Starks, Georgetown Prep's star guard was the voice of reason telling his teammates to calm down. He then proceeds to drive to the basket and draw a two shot foul. Nailing both free throws, he ties the game with about 48 seconds left to play.
Sans the shot clock in high school basketball (at least in this area) Belen has 47 seconds to waste before hoisting up a last second shot. And they did just that, giving Georgetown Prep no time to retaliate. Game. 57-55. Goodnight Prep.

National Jesuit Christmas Classic: Day 1
Back in DC on the 27th, back on the court on the 28th for yet another basketball "classic". This time the National Jesuit Christmas Classic featuring: Georgetown Prep, Canisius, McQuaid Jesuit, St. Xavier, Regis, Loyola (Baltimore), Belen and Jesuit (New Orleans). These classics have a uncanny tendency to not be so. Although the Gonzaga/Mater Dei finale was pretty good. Anyway, Loyola beat Canisius and Georgetown Prep defeated Regis. I'll be back at the Hanley Center for the final two games of day 2. Shout out to Regis for missing one, maybe two shots in the entire 1st quarter. They were on fire.

8to8: Broadway Miller -- North Carolina Rapper: INCOMPLETE
I've known Broadway for at least 4 years now and he's been the subject of many of my photo shoots. So far I've worked with him on all three of his albums. Chillin' Wit Customers Vol. 1, Gets It All Day and Catch up or Get Caught. He returned to Washington DC for the weekend to shoot a music video for his new song POSSE 2010 and attend his mixtape release party later that night at Lotus Lounge.
Check out the video for POSSE 2010 directed by Ryan A. Cole. Clearly an upgrade from Broadway's MTV debut.
I thought it would be a great opportunity to do an 8to8, but instead it turned out to be more like an 8to2. The latter part of the day ended up being a lot of driving around so we decided to cut it short. Here is a little of what I got that day. Shout out to Mr. Miller, you are not off the hook for a proper 8to8, good sir.

Same School, Different Sport
The Coolidge basketball season started at the beginning of the month. They're eight games in, but the season is still young. Last night, they matched up against Stonewall Jackson, a team they beat soundly but took a while to put them away. The team is young, 8-1 (lost to a really good DeMatha team), and the season looks promising. Hopefully I will be photographing them in the Verizon Center in March. Later this week, they're headed to Miami for one of the many nationwide December tournaments. Shout out to the orange, gray and white.

Gonzaga DC Classic: Day 3
Another Saturday, another 8 hours shooting high school basketball. This time it was another tournament/showcase with the word "classic" in it's title. The Gonzaga DC Classic. Mater Dei (CA), Jesuit College Prep (TX), Calvert Hall (Baltimore) and Iona (NY) were the visiting teams and Chantilly, Sidwell Friends, Bishop McNamara and Gonzaga played the locals. The games progressed in interestingness as the night went on and Gonzaga and Mater Dei didn't disappoint in the championship game. Gonzaga took the crown in their own tournament with a 62-59 victory. The players celebrated the mid-season tournament victory like it was a real championship so I'm guessing it was a pretty big win for the Purple Eagles. Shout out to Bender Arena...so many places to shoot from. Especially when it is mostly empty.

Broadway Miller
I photographed Broadway Miller for his mixtape Catch up or Get Caught about a month ago as seen here. He was also a willing participant in my Performance Portrait idea that that began with Deuce and Sabrey of Good Hood. So I have two questions for my Untitled audience. 1) Which Performance Portrait works better for Broadway? Leave your answers in the comments. And 2) Will you come to Broadway's listening party at Lotus Lounge (1420 K St. NW, Washington DC 20005) tonight from 9pm-10pm? Shout out to me because I'll be there.

Carroll @ Gonzaga Basketball
It's early in this basketball season but I can tell it's going to be a good one in the WCAC. I photographed Archbishop Carroll's visit to Gonzaga and the game came down to the last minutes in the 4th quarter. You can read about it here. Not to mention, I watched DeMatha play last Saturday, and they looked damn good. Shout out to good ol' DMV basketball.

3.5 Basketball Games in 8 Hours
Last Saturday, I spent the whole day sitting on a wooden floor in a camp chair with a camera attached to my face. The VMG Battle of the Beltway Classic held at the University of the District of Columbia pitted 5 teams from the Washington DC area against 5 teams from Baltimore. In the middle of that showcase, I headed over to the Verizon Center to photograph the alma mater play Georgetown. All of the Washington DC area teams won...except American. Shout out to Jordy, I randomly ran into him on the metro on the way to Verizon.

Gumby vs. The Georgetown Hoyas
Gumby, Gumby...#10 look like Gumby! That's what I heard from two courtside Georgetown fans who have been frequent hecklers for at least the past three years. I'll take a picture of them next time. Mostly, they're quite funny, but I notice that the other photographers get a little annoyed. If the game is boring, you can pretty much get your money's worth listening to them. Anyway, the Hoyas beat Mount St. Mary's 83-62. Shout out to Gumby err... Shawn Atupem for rockin' the high top fade like it's 1994 (image directly below).
