For the 5th year in a row, Gonzaga College High School has taken the championship trophy home from the Gonzaga DC Classic basketball tournament. They beat a good Charlotte Christian team54-49 in the championship game at Bender Arena. Shout out to hosting and winning your own tournaments (against pretty good out of town teams).

The 37th Annual Capital Classic
Well I guess I'm done predicting when the high school basketball season will be over because I've consistently been proven wrong. The 37th Annual Capital Classic took place at the alma mater last Thursday night and just so happens to be the longest running high school basketball all star game in the country. This years US All Star team wasn't as well known as the more popular players chose to go for the McDonald's All-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic. Since high school seniors can only participate in up to two post-season all star games, wouldn't you choose the most famous one and the one with the freshest gear? I must say, the Capital All Star team had some great players this year. Or maybe I'm just biased because I've seen them play all season. Shout out to Elton Brand...did you really sign-off on these sneakers?

WCAC Championships
I'm nearing the end of my basketball coverage for this season. There is no more Georgetown (no more home games) and no more Coolidge (lost in the semifinals). Now Gonzaga is done for the season (lost in the finals). They lost to DeMatha by 19 points after the teams split their two regular season matchups by a total of six points. Now Ballou and DeMatha will meet again in the City Title game at the Verizon Center.

In other news, Elizabeth Seton's basketball team takes the championship title after losing in the semifinals last year to Holy Cross. They will face a tough HD Woodson team in the City Title game. Shout out to the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

Gonzaga vs. DeMatha basketball
Last year, they competed in a thriller for the championship. Last Friday was no different, except it was still the regular season. Gonzaga and DeMatha will most likely play two more times this year: once in the regular season and once again for the championship. I'll check back later this month if my prediction holds true. If not, then I never said it.
Gonzaga was loose before the game but was able to pull it out in the end. Read about it here. Shout out to the next two times these teams play.

Gonzaga DC Classic: Day 3
Another Saturday, another 8 hours shooting high school basketball. This time it was another tournament/showcase with the word "classic" in it's title. The Gonzaga DC Classic. Mater Dei (CA), Jesuit College Prep (TX), Calvert Hall (Baltimore) and Iona (NY) were the visiting teams and Chantilly, Sidwell Friends, Bishop McNamara and Gonzaga played the locals. The games progressed in interestingness as the night went on and Gonzaga and Mater Dei didn't disappoint in the championship game. Gonzaga took the crown in their own tournament with a 62-59 victory. The players celebrated the mid-season tournament victory like it was a real championship so I'm guessing it was a pretty big win for the Purple Eagles. Shout out to Bender Arena...so many places to shoot from. Especially when it is mostly empty.

3.5 Basketball Games in 8 Hours
Last Saturday, I spent the whole day sitting on a wooden floor in a camp chair with a camera attached to my face. The VMG Battle of the Beltway Classic held at the University of the District of Columbia pitted 5 teams from the Washington DC area against 5 teams from Baltimore. In the middle of that showcase, I headed over to the Verizon Center to photograph the alma mater play Georgetown. All of the Washington DC area teams won...except American. Shout out to Jordy, I randomly ran into him on the metro on the way to Verizon.

Reebok All American Game(s)
In yet another installment of post season basketball all star activities for the high school kids, Reebok debuted their All-American festivities last Saturday April 18th at the alma mater. Once again...not a whole lot of defense = not great basketball, expected. But unexpected was the fervor with which the participants not only wanted to dunk, but dunk on their opponents.

2009 Basketball Capital Classic
The 36th Annual Capital Classic went down last Thursday at the alma mater where the DMV's elite took on some of the country's finest. The two games of the night pitted the District All Stars against the Suburban All Stars (Washington DC suburbs) and the Capital All Stars against the US All Stars. You know how it goes with these all star games...no defense and lots of dunks. Well these were a little different. The first game provided no defense, no dunks, lots of layups and a second half comeback. The second game provided no defense, a few dunks and a huge blowout. I guess the DMV's talent is the best in the country. Shout out to Rafael Guthrie who had a great game and was apparently playing for a scholarship...any scholarship.

Championship!!!
The Gonzaga v. DeMatha WCAC Championship game was all it was hyped up to be. If you don't believe me, watch the last twenty seconds. As an American University alum, I don't think I've ever seen Bender Arena packed with so many people. Congrats to DeMatha for coming out on top. Also, shout out to the Good Counsel Lady Falcons who took the girls championship by defeating Holy Cross. Up next...the city title game, which matches the DC public school champs against the DC private school champs played at Verizon Center.
