One More Game: KIMA vs. Princeton Day

I thought the basketball season ended for me with the City Title Game between DeMatha and Ballou. In each league after a long regular season only one team can take home the championship. The other teams are disappointed. That's how I felt about my post-game celebration coverage. Either I didn't get the shot that I was looking for or the teams were simply too cool to show any emotion. Thanks to the WISE 8 championship game between KIMA andPrinceton Day, I got some sweet redemption. KIMA beat Princeton Day in overtime 76-68 and shortly after, Coach Levett Brown was given an on court shower by Kareem Storey and a few other players. Shout out to the post-game Gatorade bath...sometimes you just have to work with what you've got.

The 6th Time is the Charm

I couldn't wait for the football season to start at the end of August and just like that, it's over. For me, it began at a dusty field in Georgetown where The Model School for the Deaf played Maret. It ended in Annapolis at Navy's Stadium where Good Counsel finally beat DeMatha. I was able to squeeze in 12 games this season. It should have been 13, but since Coolidge isn't playing in the Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving Day, I'll be in New Hampshire.

For the past 5 years, Good Counsel football has run into the buzz saw that is DeMatha football in the WCAC championship. For the past 5 years, Good Counsel has gone back to Olney, MD without a victory. This year, my first year shooting the WCAC championship, Good Counsel beats the odds. Read about it here. It was a emotional game for both sides and I was able to get some pretty good reactions. Shout out to Louis Young who had two huge interceptions and holds the trophy below.

Hyattsville, MD vs. SE DC

More than a few people could have guessed that DeMatha Catholic High School would be in the City Title game this year. But no one could have predicted the presence of Ballou High School. Ballou, more known for its world travelled marching band than basketball, stunned the DCIAA and made its way to and through the championship game. They also gave DeMatha a run for its money, but in the end, DeMatha continued their winning ways.

Warriors Win

Nope, not the Lady Warriors, just plain old Warriors. HD Woodson's girls basketball team perennially finds itself in the DCIAA Championship game if not the City Title game. Year in and year out, they come equipped with loads of Division I talent (who all seem to be going straight to NC State). This year was no different. Led by 6'6" Jeniece Johnson, the HD Woodson Warriors beat the Good Counsel Lady Falcons to be called the best high school girls basketball team in the area. Shout out to the Warriors who were rockin' the Penny's...in black and red, nice.

Championship!!!

The Gonzaga v. DeMatha WCAC Championship game was all it was hyped up to be. If you don't believe me, watch the last twenty seconds. As an American University alum, I don't think I've ever seen Bender Arena packed with so many people. Congrats to DeMatha for coming out on top. Also, shout out to the Good Counsel Lady Falcons who took the girls championship by defeating Holy Cross. Up next...the city title game, which matches the DC public school champs against the DC private school champs played at Verizon Center.

Rare Read

Only because I don't usually shoot girls high school sports. But this championship occurred on the same day and field as the boys championship, so why not. I don't know much about the two teams (St. John's and O'Connell) but the fans were crazy. St. John's, ranked #1 throughout the season, took home the title with a 2-1 victory. For a more thorough explanation go here.

Gonzaga = Champs

I've kind of been following this team a lot this season. Partly because of talent but mostly because of proximity. For example, Good Counsel's football team is ranked #1 in the area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) by the Washington Post, but you won't catch me out in Olney, MD. Okay, you might. Anyway, Gonzaga plays great soccer and this past weekend I photographed their championship game. I was hoping for a Gonzaga vs. DeMatha three-match, but got O'Connell instead. Shout out to all of the parents that ordered pictures from me throughout the season.
