Paul VI and the VI Man!

Often in spectator sports, the home fans make a lot of noise and create an atmosphere that give their team a perceived advantage over the visiting team. In football there's the 12th man and in basketball there's the 6th man. But at Paul VI Catholic High School, there is the VI Man. Last Friday, Paul VI played their biggest rival and crosstown competition, Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School. I photographed both the girls and boys

varsity teams in during their exciting match-ups against O'Connell. The girls were able to pull out a victory but t

he boys were unsuccessful. After giving up the lead shortly after halftime, they never regained it (read about it here). Who knew hundreds of shrieking teenagers could be so

damn loud.

Happy Belated Birthday, America!

While a lot of people flocked to DC for a 4th of July celebration, I headed south for Charlottesville and Richmond. While in C'ville, I visited Monticello, Jefferson Vineyards and Carter Mountain Orchard. I'm currently working on my own retirement residence (Mikecello) but I'm still waiting on an inheritance of 3,000 acres of land in southeast Texas.

I also saw Richmond's minor league baseball team, the Flying Squirrels. While I didn't appreciate the extra innings, I did enjoy the post-game fireworks show! Shout out to Thomas Jefferson and the minor leaguers trying to make it.

Triple Overtime

Apparently, Georgetown Prep and St. Stephen's & St. Agnes are two of the top high school boys lacrosse programs in the country. And they're both right here in the ol' mid-Atlantic. The play was methodical and precise and if one team made a mistake, the other would quickly capitalize. Read about it here. Although I still don't understand what goes on between the lines on a lacrosse field, it was an intensely played game from the start through the third overtime. St. Stephen's & St. Agnes thought they had the game won in the 2nd overtime but the players foot was in the crease when he shot it (photo below). See me acting like I know what I'm talking about? Georgetown Prep ended the game with a score in the third OT. Shout out to the crease, apparently it's not a good place to be when you're trying to score.

QB Jake: Part II

Last weekend, I went back to photograph Jake this time against the rival Potomac School in McLean, VA. Not only did the Maret Frogs take home a 13-6 victory, but they did it during Potomac's homecoming. The good thing was that there was no rain this time. The great thing was that Jake threw a sweet touchdown pass in the winning effort. If you click here and go to picture #13, you can see me missing the second half of that touchdown pass. But here is the first half of the play, right before he gets crushed by a defensive linemen.

QB Jake

I got a pretty cool assignment this past weekend to photograph Jake, the quarterback of the Maret School Frogs. The not so cool part of the assignment was that it rained for much of the game and not just normal rain or drizzle. It was a heavy rainforest/monsoon type downpour and sideways rain that I'm not really a big fan of. Luckily for me, I was prepared and able to keep the gear dry but at some points it wasn't even worth taking a picture.

It was a really competitive game but Jake and the Frogs lost to Flint Hill in two overtimes 13-7. Next week, Maret has a shot at redemption against The Potomac School. Shout out to the weather for being uncooperative for most of the game but allowing the sun to come out immediately after it ended.
